Dr. Thomas Rummler studied Law at the University of Cologne. Thereafter and after the completion of his doctoral degree in 1982 he was employed as scientific assistant at the Institute for international and foreign Law at the University of Cologne.
From 1983 until 1987 he worked at the Federal Ministry for the Education and Science and since 1987 at the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, temporary as Personal Assistant of the Secretary of State and as Head of the Ministers office.
Since 1990 he was firstly as Head of Division and since 2005 as Deputy Director-General jointly responsible for the implementation of Extended Producer Responsibility in the fields of Packaging, Automotives, Batteries, Electric and Electronic Equipment as well as the development of the Circular Economy in Germany and on the level of the EU.
He is well known for numerous publications and appearances as a speaker at seminars concerning national and European waste management law. After his retirement in early 2018 he acts as independent consultant in the field of waste management law.
