Matthias specialises in German and European environmental, technology and foreign investment and trade law. He advises clients in regulatory disputes as well as on environmental and planning issues in infrastructure projects. His particular area of expertise is in waste and end-of-life product legislation as well as in the regulatory product safety framework, primarily on electrical, electronic and similar equipment. He has also advised on environmental and regulatory issues in a large number of high-profile transactions for clients across a wide range of industries. He has also broad experience in the regulatory framework for public infrastructure or administrative fees.

Matthias Schleifenbaum completed his legal education at the universities of Bonn and Seville and served his legal clerkship (Referendariat) at E.ON AG, Duesseldorf as well as in the Corporate practice group of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer. He worked as a research assistant at the University of Cologne, and was awarded a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree in Environmental, Planning and Regulatory Law from Nottingham Law School (UK). Apart from his legal education, he also gained work experience with the public broadcasting company Westdeutsche Rundfunk Köln and with the Automotive Sector Group of McKinsey & Company, Inc.
Prior to joining avocado rechtsanwälte in May 2017, Matthias Schleifenbaum spent ten years with the public environmental, planning and regulatory law practice of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, which he left as Counsel.
